Pastor Michael S. Williams, D.Min. is a native of San Francisco, California. He is a product of San Francisco’s public school system. He received his Bachelor of Arts degree cum laude, from Bishop College, formerly of Dallas, Texas, in 1976. He earned the Masters of Divinity and Doctor of Ministry degrees from the world-renown Pacific School of Religion, Berkeley, California in 1979 and 1996 respectively.
Professional/Fraternal Activities
He served as the Assistant to the President of the Graduate Theological Union from 1996-1997 and holds dual membership with the American Academy of Religion and the Society of Biblical Literature. Dr. Williams holds the rank of Professor of Biblical Studies and Vice President for Development at the Southern Marin Bible Institute. Dr. Williams is a member of Alpha Phi Alpha, Inc.
Denominational Activities
Dr. Williams has been in the ministry for over a twenty-five years. He is a respected leader within his denomination, the National Baptist Convention, USA, Inc. He is a certified instructor through the National Baptist Convention’s (USA, Inc.) Department of Christian Education. He served in a variety of pastoral and staff positions within the United Methodist Church, the African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church, the National Baptist Convention of America, and the National Baptist Convention, USA, Inc. Since 1989, Dr. Williams has served as Pastor of the Saint James Missionary Baptist Church of San Francisco. He served as the Moderator of the Bay Area Baptist District Association (1995-99).
Publications
Since 1999, the Convention’s Sunday School Publishing Board has entrusted him with the responsibility of writing the Convention’s Adult Sunday School literature, both for teachers and students. He also writes the Adult Baptist Training Union literature for the Convention. He has authored numerous publications, a few: From Eden to Egypt: The Book of Genesis Revisited, No Rights And No Respect: A Documentary Commentary On African Life In America, Twisting in the Wind: The Anglo-American Legal Tradition and Africans in America, and Keeping The Peace: A Church Member’s Guide To Conflict Resolution.
Family Life
Dr. Williams is married to the former Patricia Andrews. They are the parents of two children, Timothy, a college administrator at Prairie View University, Prairie View, TX. Timothy is currently a Ph.D. candidate at Texas AM&N University. Their daughter, Marthaa, a Stanford University Bachelors and Masters graduate. Marthaa is currently serving as an Assistant Principal at George Washington High School in the San Francisco Unified School District.
